Dryer update
It turns out that it wasn't the heating element that had gone bad on my dryer. Instead there was a wire that had shorted out and melted the insulation. Oops! DH went to the hardware store and bought some new wire and couplers. All better!
At least you do not have to replace the dryer. I'm happy everything worked out.
