oye!

so last week we were at the conference for a good portion of the week.

Hubby had to work over the weekend and while there he got into his files and see that Darly & my ID cards will expire this coming Saturday.  We need to come and get our cards renewed this week!

I so wish that he would have checked this LAST week so we could have renewed the cards one of the days we drove right by the office.  :p

I also need to go by the store and pick up some new pants I ordered...I sure hope I ordered the right size.  That order of course didn't show up until the day AFTER the conference ended.

Sigh

oh and the neighbor's roofer decides to show up today.

I wonder why Darly is still asleep?

In other randomness?

We've got this one member of our Church who is a bit eccentric (I hope that's a nice term for it).  I'm not sure what all is going on there...
At any rate this guy wanted to do a Reformation Fair.  This guy had set up a facebook page for it so that he could keep us all informed.  When I joined the page he made me an administrator.  lovely!  We quickly realized that there was no possible way to be ready to do this by Oct 31st this year.  We didn't have a location, a plan or the resources to do it. So the page has been sitting dormant since we canceled the plans to do the fair this year.
Today guy gets on the page and goes into a full blown rant about political issues.  Just what we need associated with our Church!  I was out of there pretty quickly.

Where I've been, what I've been doing

Those of you who have friended me on Facebook know a bit about what I've been up to as I was able to post some...but I've been too busy to come over here lately.

As if sewing costumes for Darly's newest play "Little Princess" wasn't enough, I also volunteered us (Darly, DH & myself) to help with the LCMC Annual Gathering.

So on Saturday Darly, DH & I went up to the convention center and helped prepare the bags that we handed out to all the attendees.  The rest of our Youth Group and some of the adults at church were also there.  We even had a few folks from some of the other area LCMC churches come to help as well.  We managed to get the bags loaded and set up really quickly with enough time for some goofing around and snacks as well.
Then we brought home an extra kid for a few hours of merriment for Darly.  This worked out as there was a Youth Group event that evening that Darly & I went to.

Sunday we had the honor of having the pastors from the Estonia Tartu Academy join us and present the message.  We had a lot of guests because of the Annual Gathering.  Then the church threw a bbq lunch where we learned even more about the Tartu Academy.
Then Darly & I went to the convention center to get set up and ready for the opening of the Gathering.  We were asked to run the merchandise table along with our friends the P family.  The kids did a lot of running around for us.
We enjoyed dinner at the conference, I don't know what part of the pig that roast was from but it was sure yummy.  I had to force myself to stop eating it.  At our table was a youth minister and missionaries from Kenya who help streetkids become reunited with their families.  They provide counseling so that the kids and families are reconciled and stay together.
After dinner we got to go to worship with over 1200 pastors from all over the world!  It was an incredible experience with a great message provided by a pastor from Evergreen.

Monday we started the day early (for us) at 7:30 at the conference with more merchandise table work.  At lunch we shared a table with a pastor of a small church in Oregon...his wife homeschools their kids and runs their entire Sunday School program as it is just 6 kids...her 3 and their cousins.  They're looking and praying that they can grow.
After lunch it was time for break-out sessions.  The kids and I helped everyone find the rooms that they were looking for.  We all learned that while the convention center's computerized map was helpful the scrolling list of classes was too fast for anyone to read.  I gave Darly a list of classes & rooms which she found most helpful.

Tuesday early again and off to work the merchandise table.  As Darly was very tired she set up a nap area in the back of the coat closet and zonked out for about an hour & a half (she was much happier after that!) we had another afternoon of directing traffic...but we were prepared with a list of classes this time.  However, there was one class that not many had signed up for, but everyone wanted to attend...so it was put in a room that wasn't big enough.  I later learned that if folks had signed up for this class they could have scheduled a larger room...but they could only go by how folks registered.  I'm betting that the nearly empty larger room was where all the extras came from.  :(
That evening I had a board meeting with my homeschool group...so I was up pretty late.

Wednesday was early again but it was also the final day.  We were expecting a lot more sales that day, but it seemed that folks weren't so eager to buy a lot of stuff they had to figure out how to get home.  So instead we had to figure out how to get all the extra merchandise back to Michigan.
I was able to get our laundry done when we got home.

Today is Thursday and Darly & I are heading up to Celestial Seasonings for a tour and some tea!  Then Darly has her CYT class at 4:30.  I think I'm going to try to go to the gym as I haven't been able to do that for a while.

Brined & Roasted Chicken

Brine

about 29oz of veggie broth (2 cans)
1/3 cup kosher salt
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/4 tsp ground pepper
1/8 tsp ground ginger
1/8 tsp ground allspice

combine and bring to a boil to dissolve the salt & sugar.  Then cool with ice.  Once the brine is cold, pour over your 5lb (aprox) cleaned roasting chicken and let the brine do it's job for at least 2 hours.

discard the brine

using kitchen sheers remove the back bone from the bird (save this in the freezer for chicken broth later) and crack the breast bone so that you can lay the bird out flat on your roasting pan.

Then I used Alton's recipe as a guide

Broiled, Butterflied Chicken

Recipe courtesy of Alton Brown
Prep Time: 30 min
Cook Time:30 min
Level:Easy
Serves: 4 to 6 servings (we're getting a lot more servings out of this!)

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons black peppercorns (I used about a tsp of ground pepper)
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced  (I used about a tsp of garlic salt)
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt  (omitted due to garlic salt above)
  • 1 lemon, zested (about a TBSP of lemon juice)
  • Extra virgin olive oil (canola oil)
  • Onions, carrots and celery cut into 3 to 4-inch pieces (omitted)
  • 3 to 4-pound broiler/fryer chicken  (oh, my bird was bigger!)
  • 1 cup red wine (omitted)
  • 8 ounces chicken stock (omitted)
  • 2 to 3 sprigs thyme (omitted)
  • Canola oil

Directions

Position the oven rack 8 inches from the flame/coil and turn broiler to high. Crack peppercorns with a mortar and pestle until coarsely ground. Add garlic and salt and work well. Add lemon zest and work just until you can smell lemon. Add just enough oil to form a paste.
Check out your refrigerator for onions, carrots and celery that are a little past their prime. Cut vegetables into pieces and place in a deep roasting pan.
Place chicken on a plastic cutting board breast-side down. Using kitchen shears, cut ribs down one side of back bone and then the other and remove. Open chicken like a book and remove the keel bone separating the breast halves by slicing through the thin membrane covering it, then by placing two fingers underneath the bone and levering it out. Turn chicken breast-side up and spread out like a butterfly by pressing down on the breast and pulling the legs towards you. Loosen the skin at the neck and the edges of the thighs. Evenly distribute the garlic mixture under the skin, saving 2 teaspoons for the jus. Drizzle the skin with oil and rub in, being sure to cover the bird evenly. Drizzle oil on bone side of chicken as well.
Arrange bird in roasting pan, breast up, atop vegetables.
Place pan in oven being sure to leave the oven door ajar. Check bird in 10 minutes. If the skin is a dark mahogany, hold the drumstick ends with paper towels and flip bone-side up. Cook 12 to 15 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees. Juices must run clear. Remove and place chicken into a deep bowl and cover loosely with foil.
Tilt pan so that any fat will pool at corner. Siphon this off with a bulb baster. (This fat is great in vinaigrettes). Set pan over 2 burners set on high. Deglaze pan with a few shots of red wine and scrape brown bits from bottom using a carrot chunk held with tongs. Add chicken stock, thyme, the remaining garlic paste and reduce briefly to make a jus. Strain out vegetables and discard. Slice chicken onto plates or serve in quarters. Sauce lightly with jus and serve.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
note:  all that oil so close to your broiler is going to make a lot of smoke!  make sure you ventilate your kitchen well unless you like a smoky house.
I didn't make the sauce, the chicken has enough flavor from the brine that it doesn't need it.
I made this on Wednesday.  Thursday we had it again...and now tonight I'm taking what's left and making the chicken & rice recipe below.
wardrobe try two - another fail
So yesterday we were near the mall and decided to try there for Darly's fall wardrobe.
We went to lunch first and then headed over to JCPenney.  Part one of our problem is that I wanted to use my creative financing plan on this and did not have a gift card with me (didn't know how much of a card I would need!)  So we were just looking.
We did find things that fit and were acceptable (although no real winter clothing).  So my plan was to write down everything that we liked and then order them online using the gift card.
The problem is virtually NOTHING that we found in the store was available online!!!  See JCPenney has a creative financing thing of their own and where you used to be able to find everything that they sold online as they could just pull stock from a store if needed, they don't do that anymore.  What's in the store is what you get and what's online is all you can get.  They don't backorder, they don't restock.  You can't really call it catalog ordering anymore.  :p
So now I have to drive all the way back to the store as Darly really wants the cute owl shirt we found.
Sigh!  But at least we'll have the gift card with us.
clothing frustrations...I'm naming names!
So yesterday I took Darly shopping for her fall wardrobe because she refuses to quit growing and her clothes from last year aren't fitting.  sigh!
We looked at Target a little, but honestly the quality there is too cheap for the price they're asking.  And we didn't see anything that we liked.
So we went to Kohls.  And here is where things got interesting...
Darly currently has some Mudd girls size 14 jeans that fit in the waist but the length is a bit short on her.  So she tried on some size 16s.  I grabbed two skinny jeans and two flair jeans.  (unfortunately the two skinny jeans were the exact same pair...oops!)
I also grabbed a pair of SO jeans in size 16...I believe that they were bootcut.
And while looking in the Junior dept we picked out a few pair of Mudd Jeans in size 1.
Mudd 16 skinny - fit in the waist, too tight in the thighs, the length was very long and she didn't like the coloring on these (they had the bleached in distress marks)
Mudd 16 flair - were way too big in the waist...and even though they have adjustable waists, what 14y/o wants that???  oh and the length was too long.
SO 16 boot cut were just too big everywhere...we could pull those right off while zipped.
The Junior sized jeans were too tight and too low.  I'm not putting my 14y/o in super low rise jeans.  They are stupid, jeans are supposed to cover the entire bottom and underware.
So she tried on the Mudd 14 flair... um fit in the waist, but the length was too short.  grrr
Sales lady suggested that we try Levis.  I don't like the price on Levis, but we tried.  and even though we were in the 7-16 section, these were super low rise also.  I refuse to pay extra for less pant.
So sadly Darly did not get any new jeans.  We also struck out on shirts as the ones she picked out were itchy due to the cute silver threads in the material...soft on the outside, itchy inside.  Ummm Nope!
I sure miss the days when each size was the same, but now it isn't even the same with the same maker.
Some creative financing...
Normally I just pay for everything using my cashback credit card and am fine with that.
However if I buy gift cards at my grocery store, I can earn more fuel points (=cheaper gas)
I have gift card that gives me 5% cash back when I use it.
so I use the cashback credit card to put money on the 5% gift card that I can use to buy other gift cards to earn more fuel points.
Confusing, I know.  But it is saving me money.
Pizzagna
I cudda sworn that this recipe was already on my blog, but I couldn't find it...so here it is...again if you've already seen it.
16 oz cooked large egg noodles (or if you're fancy use one of those other noodles that will grab a lot of the sauce)
2 jars of your favorite pizza sauce (sorry I don't remember how many ounces that is...if you make your own pizza sauce it's about 4 cups or so, I think)
8oz LARGE curd cottage cheese (you could use small curd or ricotta cheese if you like...we like the large)
any pizza toppings you like (we like pepperoni & canadian bacon cut up)
mozzarella cheese to sprinkle on top
cook up your noodles and drain them
In that same pot heat up your pizza sauce with the toppings and the cottage cheese.  Add the noodles back in and stir well to mix.  Serve with the mozzarella cheese to sprinkle on top.
This recipe is modified from one I saw on Rachael Ray's 30 Minute Meals...but she makes her own sauce and uses ricotta cheese.
chicken & noodles
a family favorite
2 chicken breasts cut up
chicken seasonings (whatever your family likes)
cup of water mixed with 1 tsp chicken bouillon
cooked noodles (I use about 5 good sized handfuls)
frozen peas (I tossed them in with the noodles about 3 min before they were due to be done)
cut your raw chicken into bite sized pieces and season.  Allow this it sit for a bit while your pan is heating up.
Spray a frying pan with spray oil and heat over high heat.  Add in the chicken to the pan and let it brown a bit.  Stir to turn the chicken over and get as much browing as possible.  add in 1/2 the chicken bouillon liquid and cover to steam the chicken until it is done...then let as much of the liquid evaporate out as possible...I let the pan get completely dry.
Mix the chicken with the noodles and peas in the pot you cooked the noodles in...add the remaining chicken liquid to the frying pan to loosen up the dried on seasonings and then add that to the chicken & noodles.  Mix well and serve!
This is also really good with some chicken gravy, but my daughter doesn't like gravy.  :(
beef tortilla soup
I just sort of made this up as I went and it turned out really well...
1 lb ground beef
1TBSP onion powder or 1/2 chopped onion (I have to use the powder because of the pickies!)
1 15oz (are they still 15oz?) can of pinto beans
1 can (I don't know what size it was...way smaller than other cans) Tomatoes w/ green chilis (like Rotel)
1 can (a bit larger that the "Rotel" can) diced stewed tomatoes
20 oz chicken broth  (since I had so much broth I drained the tomatoes, but if you're using canned, put in the liquid from your tomatoes also)
aprox 3 oz tomato paste (I had some left-over in the freezer...this is optional)
2 tsp cumin
salt & pepper to taste
brown the gr beef with chopped onions if you're using them and drain (if you're using onion powder add it in later as you don't want all your onion to go down the drain!)
add in your seasonings, tomatoes & beans.
Let simmer
I served this with rice, cheddar jack cheese & tortilla chips.  Hubby picked out the tomatoes.
This would also be good with carrots, corn, peppers and squash if you have it.  Just toss them in and let it simmer until the veggies are cooked.
Chicken & rice recipe
I haven't had a lot to say here, so I thought that I would share some of the recipes that have worked for my picky family...
I needed a quick and easy recipe for dinner the other night (as I had forgotten to thaw anything out) so I ran to the store and picked up a rotisserie cooked chicken.
I ripped half the chicken off the bones (saved the bones for broth later in the freezer) and cut up the meat into bite sized pieces.
I cooked 4 cups of rice in chicken bouillon* in my rice cooker.
Then I just mixed the two.  I served it with cooked frozen veggies on the side.
The next day to mix it up a bit, I "whipped" up a batch of gravy...
2TBSP butter
2TBSP corn starch
chicken bouillon, water, salt & pepper
and poured that over the left-over chicken & rice.
Both dishes were a hit here.
*note: you could easily use chicken broth or stock.  I just didn't have any at the time...but I will soon as I have that carcass in the freezer.
Sympathy for Mr McGregor
Growing up and reading the Peter Rabbit series by Beatrix Potter, I always of course sided with Peter and his bunny friends against that mean old Mr McGregor.  And still I'm not of fan of Mr McGregor and his desire to eat the flopsy bunnies in a pie when he found them sleeping on his compost pile.  I'm so glad they out smarted him.
HOWEVER, today I sure felt some sympathy for Mr McGregor.  I have been working and worrying over my summer garden since our terrible hail storm took the entire thing out.  We have a very short growing season here and having to start over from scratch is quite depressing.
So I was all giddy when I noticed that my cherry tomatoes were producing and that one this morning was dark orange.  I was all excited for my very first tomato of the season in a day or two.
UNTIL I got home from church today and noticed that a bird had not only ATE almost all of this tomato, but that it had also munched on the neighboring totally green tomato!  That's what gets me the most mad about these little thieves...they aren't even patient enough to wait until the fruit or veggy is even ripe!
We were hoping that with the hail storm knocking out all the apples and cherries this year that perhaps the birds would have moved on to greener pastures and we could have our second harvest.  Apparently NOT.  All the apples that weren't knocked out of the tree have damage on them, but there was still the hope that perhaps I could make apple sauce from what remained.  Ummm NO!  The birds and yellow jackets are eating them.  The other day there was a full murder of crows in the apple tree, all munching away on green apples.  No they're not at all ripe yet...normally they don't ripen until September.
So since I'm not using the bird net on the cherry tree this year...the cherries are toast from the hail.  I grabbed my net and put it over my poor little garden.  I wonder how many of those pesky thieves will get stuck still trying to steal MY veggies?
Giggle!
A while back a friend of mine gave me an awesome suggestion.  We were at a local festival and all these booths would give you free stuff in exchange for your contact info...I was passing on the free stuff because I get enough junk mail as it is and didn't want more.  But she suggested that I set up an email account just for the known junk mail.  Genius!
So I set up the account and right away started to use it to email folks who were mailing me stuff when I'm on the do not mail list.  That was annoying...they mail you stuff you didn't ask for and say to get off the mailing list to email them...so now they have your email account address.  :P  Now I've got them back.  ha ha
So I hadn't been checking my junk mail account and today went in there and find the following email.
The upper right hand corner shows the name Google+ has an issue with.
The first thing that made me giggle was that they sent it 10 days ago...so the deadline to prevent the hold on my profile is already passed.  But biggest giggle came when reading that my non-action won't harm my ability to use the account just for what I wanted it for.  YAY!  It just stops me from using the account for the services that I had no intention of using.  bwahaha!
yeah, whatever.
I wonder if I should argue that "No, Really!  My first name is Nomore."
daily life goes on
So Darly went on a mission trip with our church's youth group.  They had a ton of fun and barely worked at all.  She didn't miss us at all either and the kids didn't want to come home at the end...but that could have been because they didn't want to be crammed into the cars like sardines for two days. ;o)
While she was gone I took care of Oreo along with our own pets.  Once Oreo got over the fact that his people weren't coming right back he settled into daily life at our house pretty well.  Lilly tolerated him...a bit too much in most cases.  Other than being extremely jealous when Oreo got to go for a ride and she had to stay home she didn't seem to mind when he left at all.  Oreo was overjoyed to be reunited with his family and quickly shunned me when he was in his mom's arms.
I've been working on our vacation.  For part of it we would like to go to a few theme parks and I wanted to use our military discount to get those tickets.  So first I emailed the ticket office for more info on how to do that.  No answer.  Then I called...still no answer.  So thinking that perhaps our ticket office was closed due to budget cuts, I tried another nearby base.  No answer.  I tried their second line...no answer.  So I poked around and found another phone number for our ticket office...no answer!  (note, I left messages too and never got a return call)  So hubby went by the office in person.  Guess what, it was open!  SHOCK!  But here's the kicker... it is now too late for us to order the tickets through them as we needed two weeks notice!  I tried contacting them two weeks ago!  GRRR!
Luckily we can get the tickets in person at a location near the theme park.  I need to try calling again to see if they need to be reserved...but guess what...No Answer!  LOL!
Our window that we ordered back in June is supposed to be replaced here soon...we'll see what the new 2pm time actually turns into.
Oreo’s saga Part 1
Oreo is staying with us for a while.  His people are on a mission trip.  This blog post is from his point of view...or at least my interpretation of what his view might be.
Day one of my imprisonment…
Well at least I recognize this place.  I’ve been here two times before.  I STILL can’t figure out WHAT I did to deserve this banishment though.  No matter how much I whine and howl, my people ignore me…and the warden here either laughs at me or tells me to “Hush!”
Day two of my imprisonment…
The people here are idiots!  No matter how much I try they REFUSE to give me treats or human food.  They can tell I haven’t been eating my food.  The warden tried giving me some of this other dog’s food, but it is just kibble.  I can’t believe she willingly eats that crap!  Not only does she eat it…she went and gobbled up my kibble too!  What an idiot…she can have it!  Whining doesn’t help me at all.  Sigh!
Day three of my imprisonment…
Today was somewhat better.  But the warden still is refusing to give me any treats or human food.  I guess I better eat this kibble as it is all they’ll give me.  They have to hide my kibble from the dog who lives here, so they’re putting it in my bed…hummm breakfast in bed.  I could get used to this!  The humans have moved all the furniture around and it smells a bit weird in here.  The walls are turning funny colors.  The humans keep yelling at the other dog…she keeps getting in their way while they color on the walls.
Day four of my imprisonment…
The humans left this morning so they gave me a treat…YAY!  FINALLY!  But I got locked up…phoey!  Why do I fall for that trick every time?  The man came back after forever and let me out so I could go bark.  Later the warden came back.  The humans moved all the furniture back and made a lot of racket with that loud machine…then the warden made them stop …said her head was hurting.  Later the warden made the house smell REALLY GOOD!  So good my tummy was rumbling.  But the people ate almost all the yummy smelling stuff in another room.  THE NERVE!  But forever they gave me some…oh man that was good, I kept looking for more.  So I went and ate some of my kibble because my tummy was still rumbling.
Crazy Day!
This has been one crazy day so far and it is LONG from being over.
We start off with me waking up in pain...ugh!  So I just stayed up since I had scheduled a car appointment.  Ooops!  I should back up... YESTERDAY Darly left for her mission trip and we took in Oreo the dog of one of the chaperones going on the trip.
Actually they didn't leave for their trip until this morning at 5am, but since I didn't want to get up that early AND I was baby sitting the dog...we arranged a swap Kid for Dog last night.  So I woke up in pain and worried about my baby being on the road and to a whiny dog who misses his family.
Then I flip on the radio and hear that they are praying for Colorado...so I quickly go to a news website and see that some idiot shot a bunch of people in a movie theater.  I'm so sad, angry, confused about this.  I really hope that they come up with a better motive than what is leaking out that the idiot said "I'm the Joker."
Sigh
Yesterday a friend asked to borrow my ice cream maker.  So I ran that to another friend's house this morning so that friend one could pick it up.  Friend two was having a garage sale today and I found out that 3 people had stole items from her...one woman stole all the jewelry that they had for sale.  What is with people???
now for the car service rant...
I went online to my car's dealer's website to set up the appointment.  But I never received any confirmation of my appointment.  So I called the dealer this morning and he said that they weren't busy so I should bring my car in... he didn't bother setting me up with an appointment (even though I "had" one!)
So I get there and guess what?  They're busy now!  The service guy tells me that it is going to take about 45 minutes for my oil change.  (that I expected!)
After waiting for an hour and 15 min, I go find my service advisor (yeah, that's what they call them!) and he apologizes and says they're running behind, but he'll call back there in a few minutes to see how much longer it will be.  hummm why not call NOW?
I wait another half an hour and he comes to get me that they're done... no car wash... no vacuuming out my car.  Charged me $3.50 for telling them that my check tires light was on and miss-charged me for the base price on my oil change.  Oh and then I find out that my $10 rebate for this service will be in the form of a gift card.
Guess who WON'T EVER go back there again???
Needless to say that after all of that, I wasn't the best driver on the roads.  :p  I can't wait to get that service survey.
Glad to be home now, fed and caffeinated.
they're tyring to get more of my money
I recently saw an ad for this new Finish Power Up Booster Agent.  And it got me to thinking...  remember the good old days when all you had to put in your dishwasher to get nice clean dishes was regular old dishwasher detergent powder?  What ever happened there?
I mean somewhere along the way we had to start adding in rinse agent...and dishwashers started coming with a special place to put the rinse agent (btw: vinegar works just as well!)  But before we didn't need that and the dishes came out clean.
and now we have to add this new stuff too?  I mean in the one ad the woman complains about the spots on her dishes and the dishwasher repair guy says it is food that didn't get washed off!  WHAT?  Why isn't the detergent doing it's job?
Oh I know why... They're just after more of my money!  SIGH!
Whatever happened to the days when manufacturers put out a good product and stood behind it?  Now days you have to buy insurance (aka extended warranties) that the darned thing won't break in the first 3 years...and note: that's a limited warranty.
I know what happened... They're just after more of my money!
I saw in the news where retailers have won a lawsuit against the credit card companies that they can now charge the consumers the bank fees retailers pay for processing credit card payments.  In case anyone wasn't paying attention...consumers HAVE been PAYING these fees all along in increased prices for the items.  Now it looks like folks who pay cash are supposed to get a discount...we'll see how long that lasts.  Especially if folks stop paying with plastic and start running on the banks for their cash (oh wait...bank fees there too!)
Speaking of the bank...every time I go in there they're trying to sell me something.  Hubby got talked into opening an account for Darly...the joke is on the bank though because that account still has just the $20 that was required to open it.  Instead of seeing my picture ID the bank wants to see my bank issued credit card as proof of my account???  What if someone had stolen my wallet?  How does a credit card prove who a person is?  Oh wait, they want me to use that card to buy stuff and not pay for it so they can charge me interest.
Why is it that in this country it seems to be crime to keep any of the money you earn?  Yes, I get that everyone is trying to earn a buck...but it seems that there are way too many folks who are earning it by cheating someone else out of that buck.  Is anyone out there still being honest?
Random - I guess
I haven't posted cuz there hasn't been a whole lot going on here.
Slowly the roofs are getting replaced in our neighborhood.  Right after the storm there was a bunch of houses that got new roofs right away, but things have slowed up a lot.  There is one roofer who got contracts for most of the houses in our neighborhood...about 10 or so I would guess.
One of the other roofers actually came up to me and asked why all the houses were being done by this roofer and why we weren't having ours done by that roofer.  That was funny...he was on his fancy phone looking this other guy up and couldn't find him.
Well Mr.Roofer who has all the contracts has had shingles delivered to 3 houses so far...but hasn't started the work on any of them yet.  I'm confused.  I am assuming that he is waiting to do the work until all the other houses are ready to go, but I don't know what the hold up might be.  I sure hope that he gets out there and does all those houses soon as I don't want to be woken up every morning to the sound of pounding for the rest of the summer.  :p
We're getting Darly ready for her mission trip.  Yesterday they asked Darly to come and help with the make up class for 3 of the kids who had to miss the first two training sessions.  Darly is concerned with the youngest member of the team.  She says he has a short temper and gets frustrated easily.  I am hoping that his outbursts were just because his older sister was there at the training also.  They'll be working on different teams for the trip so hopefully he'll calm down as I found him to be a really good kid when I taught him a few years ago.  fingers crossed!
Darly has also taken up a new hobby/craft.  Card making.  She uses supplies found in the scrapbooking section of the store to make cards.  She is really good at it, so I'm encouraging her.  We've been blessed by several people who have given her a lot of supplies for her new endeavor.   She has been designing our Christmas Card fronts for years now, so this is really an extension of that.
We tried to have a garage sale a few weeks ago.  That was really a bust.  It was part of a community garage sale that our HOA did a terribly poor job of advertising.  Luckily several other communities were also doing a sale that weekend...however, with so much to choose from and the heat potential buyers were reluctant to leave the comforts of their cars to see what all we had for sale.  If they didn't see anything they wanted from the car...they just kept going.  And it also didn't help that hubby expected to make good money for our stuff...several people walked away upon hearing the prices hubby wanted.  I managed to sell quite a bit of stuff, but hubby balked at the very low price I got.  I didn't care as we have been putting this same stuff out at every garage sale for the past 5 to 10 years.  I just want it all gone!  Hubby now has most of it listed on craigslist hoping that someone will want to pay for this stuff.
That's about it.  sigh...terribly exciting summer so far.
TMD Ponderings
Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) occur as a result of problems with the jaw, jaw joint and surrounding facial muscles that control chewing and moving the jaw. These disorders are often incorrectly called TMJ, which stands for  temporomandibular joint.
What Is the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge joint that connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the temporal bone of the skull, which is immediately in front of the ear on each side of your head. The joints are flexible, allowing the jaw to move smoothly up and down and side to side and enabling you to talk, chew, and yawn. Muscles attached to and surrounding the jaw joint control the position and movement of the jaw.
I've suffered from TMD since I for nearly 30 years now.  And I've researched and tried a few things to try to help...
I believe that the beginning of my problems began when I got braces on my teeth.  I had some pretty weird stuff going on in my mouth and my mom wanted my smile fixed.  She shopped around for a while to find an orthodontist who was willing to even try to fix my mouth because I was too young.  See back then they normally didn't start orthodontia until a kid was in their teens and I was only 9.  Part of my messed up mouth was that I had buck teeth and a pretty bad overbite.  So bad in fact that my lower teeth when my jaw was closed lined up with the back of my upper pallet.  So for the first part of my treatment, the doctor wired all my upper teeth together and fit my back teeth with bands that would hold a neck gear.  This in part took care of my buck teeth (I had some other stuff done too, including oral surgery), but it didn't really line up my bite the way the orthodontist wanted.  So he decided to fit me with a mouth appliance that he came up with himself.  To make this appliance he had me hold a pencil in my mouth straight upward...so my lower jaw was pulled forward in front of my upper teeth.  I had to wear this thing at night with a head gear.  And yes, I drooled all over the place!  Luckily I only was tortured by this for about 6 months or so.  I am still not sure if this was because I was done with treatment or because my parents ran out of money to pay for it.
Fast forward to 17 years old.  And I wake up my jaw locked.  It won't open, it won't close.  Luckily my jaw eventually popped and worked so that I could eat and stuff.  But now I began my journey with a lovely popping jaw that still plagues me to this day.  My mother finds another orthodontist who says I have TMJ (what they called it at the time) and he decides that the best way to fix my jaw is to push my lower jaw back to it's original position.  He fits me with a mouth piece (that he made out of red plastic that they normally use to make retainers with) that has dents in it that match my lower teeth...to push my lower jaw back.  (I looked like I was constantly sucking on a red Jolly Rancher candy!)  My second bite plate I begged for clear plastic instead...and for that one he had me hold a pencil in my teeth pointing down!  After my jaw had supposedly been fixed (it still popped, but it didn't lock up anymore) the orthodontist wanted to fit my mouth with full braces and pull my lower jaw back forward to line up my bite again.  Since I was almost 18 and almost not covered my my parents insurance anymore AND the entire treatment made no sense to me, I declined to have it done.
Now we go to when I'm 27, I went into the doctor because I was having severe ear pain and thought that I might have an ear infection...even though I did not have any kind of fever.  Seeing no fever the doctor puts his fingers in my jaw joints and asks me to open my mouth...POP!  He diagnoses me with TMJ and sends me to see an oral surgeon.  This doctor decides to treat me with "muscle relaxers" at night to keep me from grinding my teeth and during the day I was supposed to do "biofeedback exercises" to make my body aware of my clenching.  My treatments went until my doctor was sent to a new base...and we were soon sent to another base right afterward.
A few months ago I noticed that my TMD was bothering me and that my jaw's alignment was such that I couldn't close my jaws together to eat properly.  It was fun eating soft foods so that I didn't choke on anything.  I started researching to see what the current treatments are as I knew that some treatments in the past for TMD had been utter failures.  I also did a quick check of my insurance coverage...guess what, neither our medical or dental insurance will cover ANY kind of treatment for TMD at all.  WHY?  Because doctors are still baffled as to how to treat TMD so insurance doesn't want to pay for any experiments.  Hummm they should look at my history. :p
I'm writing this because two days ago my right eye started twitching...it was becoming very bothersome and I couldn't figure out the cause.  I was talking with some friends and mentioned that the last time this happened it was when I was getting treated for my TMD with medication.  I thought the twitching was a side effect of the medication, even though my doctor said that eye twitching wasn't a side effect listed for that medication.  I haven't been on that medication since 1996, so I knew it wasn't the medication causing the eye twitches this time.  Then I went to rub my jaw and noticed the pain in my joint... ut oh!
Last night after having jaw pain and eye twitches for the past few days I decided to try taking a muscle relaxer.  (I have some left over from another problem)  I took just half a pill as a whole one will knock me on my butt pretty hard.  And that took care of the eye twitch...but I have been awake for 7 hours now and I'm still hung over from this stuff.  So I don't think that will be an effective treatment for me.  Bummer.
time for more research!
Hail storm recovery
Our house before the hail storm.  I didn't get a shot that shows you all the damage to it.
And here it is now (minus the ladder!)  We'll have to get that flashing painted.
The window in the upstairs bedroom there on the left was cracked and the replacement for it is on order.
Now for the garden.  See this link for the before shots.
 Lettuce & Spinach (although I don't see any spinach in this shot.)  They were tiny seedlings when the storm hit so they weren't all that hurt by the storm.  Doing well and about ready to harvest.
 slicing tomatoes, finally have flowers again.
 dark purple sweet peppers, they have some buds now.
 cherry tomatoes with flowers.
 small sweet peppers, there might be a bud there.
 egg plant, no flowers, yet
 roma tomatoes, no flowers, but the one plant looks healthy.
 green beans...these hadn't sprouted by the storm and still weren't sprouting about a week ago, so I tried digging them up...didn't find much so I planted new seed.
 pumpkins, weren't sprouted for the storm.
 squash, 2 1/2 made it.
the onions look pretty bad, but I harvested some and they're not too bad.  strong smell that mellows with cooking.  Great for broth & soup, which is all I can use them for anyway as hubby & Darly don't like them.
I have to say that I am VERY impatient when it comes to my garden.  Part of this is our super short growing season here.  We can't actually plant anything outside until Mother's day and to be safe from frost I usually wait for Memorial day and just buy the plants from our nursery.  I choose plants that already have fruit or veggies on them.  So the hail storm was for me a huge disappointment.  I have a friend who has offered to help me make a hail screen for my garden and I'll have to do that for next year.
Growin up
It is a bit funny how life kind of sneaks up on you and shows you things you didn't want to see (were hiding from) and one of those things is about how you're growing up.
We all can't wait to become adults but pretty quickly learn that there's a lot of yucky things that come with that.  Things we would rather ignore....like work and stuff.
But lately there have been a few things that have happened that kinda smacked me in the face with that entire growing up thing.  One is the recent hail storm and having to make the arrangements for getting the repairs done.  I guess it didn't hit me before because I just put it off and let hubby deal with it...note: he didn't deal with it either, so we are just now getting the roof replaced. :p
The other thing is happened at Church.  I don't know if you've noticed but in a Church there's a certain order to how things are done.  When you're in one age bracket you do a certain type of job that needs to be done at Church...but there are some things that you don't do because that's for someone older.  Probably because that was a job your parents used to do so you expect folks your parents' age to do them.  And then one day it hits you... YOU ARE THE AGE YOUR PARENTS WERE WHEN THEY DID THAT JOB!  ACK!!!!
The thing that brought this on is that I was recently asked if I would take home the communion linens and wash them.  ACK!  Who me?  Really?  um, yes YOU!
There's one lady at Church who takes care of "everything!"  She cleans up the kitchen after service and takes care of cleaning up the communion supplies...all that grown up stuff.  However, one of the ladies in our church embroidered our communion linens and when everything lady tried to get the wine stains out of them, she used bleach on them.  Well that got embroidery lady upset because the embroidery faded.  Everything lady didn't know of another way to get the wine out of the linens though... so Sunday she asked if I would do them instead.
We don't drink wine in my house and certainly don't spill it.  So I really had no idea how to get the wine out...so I was nervous.  I didn't want to mess it up.  But I agreed to try.  I sprayed Zout on the wine stains as soon as we got home and just let them sit.  A few hours later I checked and sprayed them again.  That seemed to do the trick, so I ran them through the wash and then I decided to just hang them to dry.  I ironed them this morning and now they're ready to go back to church.
I guess I just didn't feel as if I was ready to take on doing this kind of job.  Course now that I've done it and it appears that I've done it right (we'll see when I return the linens) I'll probably be doing this job for a while.  I wonder if there's someone I can trade off with though so I'm not doing church laundry every week?
